For those who seek quiet and serenity, there is no better place than finding it next to the burble of the uMkhomazi river. Translated from Zulu, this means “the river of chiefs”. This seems fitting, as King Shaka Zulu himself once travelled through this paradise and it is believed that his throne still remains somewhere in these mountains.
Guests start their journey to paradise with a winding 7km nature drive down the Umkomaas Valley, spotting various wild life such as Kudu, Nyala and Impala to name a few. With over 350 spotted bird species flying overhead and our friendly game ranger guiding you down this captivating valley, the drive will surely get you excited for what’s to come.
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by friendly staff, a refreshing face cloth and a delicious welcome drink. Walking through the lodge, you are greeted by the majestic Sandstone Cliffs, standing tall and defying earth’s gravity as they peak towards the sky, with the uMkhomazi river roaring at its feet. There really aren’t any words to describe the feeling, though retired KZN Wildlife CEO Hans Grobelaar & Grass Scientist Pieter Le Roux both agreed that – “Duma Manzi has a sense of place”.
After absorbing all its beauty, guests are shown to their rooms where they will find their personal belongings ready and waiting for them. A beautiful room in the heart of the jungle with a serene view of the river. Each Sandstone room has a private pool to make one feel relaxed and at home.
For those who are feeling a bit peckish, the restaurant offers a select menu of delicious lunch options to choose from. Those who want to explore will have our very capable and educated game rangers to their disposal. There is a choice of 3 guided walks to choose from, ranging from novice, intermediate and advanced. All three offer vast knowledge about the valley and its inhabitants.

Our award-winning Spa, which will be re-launching soon, offers various treatments and relaxing massages for those who prefer to take it easy. Sitting in a jacuzzi and watching a giraffe graze 10 feet away will definitely help you unwind.
While we’re on the subject of “launching”, let’s talk about our gorgeous Fish Eagle Lodge. These are unique self-catering rooms with their very own entertainment area, including a boma fire pit, communal swimming pool and complete kitchen/bar area. With the option of a private chef and butler, this lodge will be perfect for a group of friends or family who want to spoil themselves in the heart of nature and serenity.
After a full day of relaxing, venturing or even fishing down by the river, the Duma Manzi staff welcome you to join us for dinner. A roaring fire awaits you in our boma where you will be served a luxurious 4-course meal. Keep an eye on the sky for you might see a shooting star or two. Mornings are filled with the melody of the forest as you wake up to a beautiful view of the great uMkhomazi. You might even see a Nyala graze in front of your room as you prepare to start the day.
